Job Summary

Classification of Genetic Counselor 2 or 3 will be determined based upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.

The UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center provides multidisciplinary medical and supportive care to patients and their families with Cancer.

The role of the Genetic Counselor (GC) is to work closely with the medical providers in the evaluation of patients and families at high risk for hereditary cancer. The GC participates in both research and teaching objectives and is required to track data and report outcomes accordingly. Participates and may also lead grant-writing and performance improvement initiatives.

The mission of the Cancer Genetics and Prevention Program is to identify patients with hereditary forms of cancer in order to provide personalized care and planning for their long-term health and well-being.

The Cancer Genetics and Prevention Program is a well-established clinical and research program consisting of a medical geneticist, family nurse practitioner, medical oncologist, 14 genetic counselors, 7 genetic counseling assistants, 2 practice coordinators, database manager, and administrative supervisor. The team has participated in much of the groundbreaking research in hereditary cancer.

This position is located at both the Mount Zion campus and Mission Bay campus. This position includes travel to bay area satellite locations and affiliate hospitals to provide genetic counseling with distances as far as 50 miles.

UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APP) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governances (OMAG) in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Medical Center sites (Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Satellite Clinics, et al). Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.


Required Qualifications

GC 2: 

  • Board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling; or the American Board of Medical Genetics
  • Master's Degree in Clinical Genetic Counseling
  • Temporary or current California Genetic Counseling License
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Computer skills and basic statistics knowledge
  • Strong written, oral communication and people skills
  • Able to create and deliver professional presentations from slides
  • Demonstrate the skill to provide consultation in oncology and carry a pager to respond to the consult service across all clinical programs in the Cancer Center
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations
  • GC 3:

  • All requirements of GC2
  • Five years as a Genetic Counselor

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • One year clinical experience
  • Oncology background

  • Licensure/Certification

  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Assumes accountability for improving quality metrics associated with department/unit and meeting organizational/departmental targets. 
  • Work Environment

  • Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture.
  • Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility. 
  • Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.
  • Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.
  • Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.
